The Huntsman's Mallet // Just Make Things
Having a woodworking mallet is essential because it provides protection, control, power transmission, directional control, safety, consistency, and durability in your woodworking projects. In this video I'll be demonstrating a method to making a mallet. I'll be using maple (curly and sugar) as well as jatoba and lacewood.
If you're new to woodworking, or stubbornly cling to power tools, this is still one of the most fundamental tools needed that will protect your work from dings and marks (something that a rubber mallet or a hammer are good at doing).
If you're interested in making your own and would like a little more instructions, as well as a link to the materials and a step by step on my website, I have a link below.

When it comes to woodworking, having the right tools can make all the difference in your projects. Having a mortise chisel is like having a piece of history. While most people use a standard chisel to chop out square holes, a mortise chisel...just feels right. The problem with making your own mortise chisels is the tang. You want to make something that ensures that the chisel handle won't break...

    Good tips, but you need to get rid of the noise when you show what bite size tip it is. It's detracting from your voice over and not all your words are intelligible.

    Just set the teeth to track in the centre of the tyre, so the tension is at the gullet of the band. You can't get any band saw to track if it's tensioned at the rear of the band...

    Why wouldn’t you sand the dowels flat instead of using the a chisel ? You had already belt sanded the 2 sides of the mallet?

    Mallets from scrap are awesome and super cheap and easy. I did a Thor's Hammer one tume for haloween, forstner bit and some PVC pipe, hot glue or epoxy to hold it in. Add in a hand stitched leather strap, a little bit of spray paint, and you have a funtional tool and Halloween prop, all in one.

    out of curiosity, why not have the dowels go all the way through? why have shorter dowels AND plugs?

    • @jimthesoundman8641
      @jimthesoundman8641 7 днів тому

      Maybe he wanted to use cheaper or stronger wood for the dowels, and still wanted the visuals to match. Or maybe he didn't have enough fancy wood to do the dowels and this was a workaround.

    • @user-bx9sr5rb4y
      @user-bx9sr5rb4y 7 днів тому

      The plugs are cross-grain for asthetics and the dowels are long-grain for strength.

    I would say "Check your drill table to make sure it's perfectly square to the drill bit, oftentimes they can drift from things banging into them" Also, almost all drill bit chucks can be upgraded. I got a nice hand-tightened chuck off of Temu or Ali Express or Ebay, can't remember which, but it was the best 36 bucks I've ever spent. I never have to worry about the chuck key anymore.
